Building Resilience Through Water
BACKGROUND: Tharaka is a semi-arid region where people suffer from a high prevalence of waterborne diseases. About 80% of the population in this county depends on farming and these households are vulnerable due to their dependence on natural resources, particularly water and pasture for their survival.
THE SOLVATTEN PROJECT:
In partnership with the International Aid Service (IAS) in Tharaka, Solvatten is assisting the Tharaka North and Nithi County communities of approximately 420,000 people to gain access to clean water.
PROJECT IMPACT: One of the key beneficiaries of the project is, James Nyamu who serves as Treasurer for the Manyirani Farmers Self-Help Group (MFSHG). James owns a wood workshop and his wife is a peasant farmer. They practice subsistence and horticultural farming to provide daily food and some income. By using a Solvatten container to heat and treat their drinking water, James and his family are reducing their exposure to waterborne illness, saving money and positively impacting their health.
In Kakuma, Kenya resource-related conflicts lead to limited access to water, malnutrition, and starvation. Solvatten is delivering cleaner water and improved quality of life for residents.
