Clean water and Resilience in Al Haouz, Morocco
In Al Haouz, Morocco, communities are rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake on September 8th, 2023. Amid the reconstruction, Solvatten has launched a new initiative in partnership with Rotary Clubs in Casablanca and District 1710 Lyon Région.
On the night of September 8, 2023, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s Al Haouz province. It was the deadliest earthquake the country had experienced in over a century – nearly 3,000 people lost their lives, and entire communities were left in ruins.
People in Al Haouz are still working to rebuild. Much of the region’s infrastructure was severely damaged, and access to basic services remains fragile. In partnership with Rotary Clubs in Casablanca and District 1710 Lyon Région, Solvatten supports the recovery by providing water treatment and water heating kits to the affected communities.
Access to clean, hot water is essential in crisis recovery. When infrastructure is damaged or lacking, people often turn to unsafe water sources for their daily needs, which leads to a higher risk of waterborne diseases and infections. With Solvatten, we can help reduce this risk by enabling households to treat contaminated water directly at home using only the sun’s energy. Each kit combines heat and UV light to eliminate the harmful pathogens that cause diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid – and the result is clean and hot water. This allows families to redirect their resources toward rebuilding, rather than spending their money on medicine and fuel costs.
The project – Eau-Solvatten-Maroc – is a collaboration shaped by local needs and led with respect to the strength and resilience of the communities there. It’s a modest intervention, yes, but it’s one that speaks directly to health, resilience, and sustainable recovery.
We are grateful to our Rotary partners for helping us make this work possible.
