A 2023 UPDATE FROM SOLVATTEN

Expanding safe water access in Coastal Kenya

In 2023, our partnership with Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO) reached new hights when we expanded safe water access in Kenya’s coastal counties of Taita-Taveta and Kwale. This project reflects our commitment to long-term, locally grounded partnerships that enable practical, low-carbon solutions where they’re needed most.

Together with CANCO, we distributed 792 Solvatten kits to households and institutions across remote, off-grid areas, specifically Kachero, Mata, and Orukungu in Taveta Sub-County. These areas are characterised by unreliable water sources, heavy dependence on firewood, and limited access to public health infrastructure. Too many families rely on untreated water from rivers, shallow wells, and surface run-off – sources that pose serious health risks.

Solvatten was a well-received alternative. And, by integrating community training and support into every phase of the project, we ensured not just adoption, but confidence in use. Our approach included visits to local chiefs and ward representatives, demonstrations led by community-based organisations, and strong collaboration with local administration.

Results and Impact

  • 792 units distributed to families in Taveta Sub-County.
  • Awareness and training sessions conducted across eight villages.
  • Health and hygiene outcomes improved: beneficiaries report fewer cases of diarrheal disease and less time spent sourcing firewood or boiling water.
  • Environmental co-benefits: reduced deforestation pressure, lowered household emissions, and increased awareness of climate-smart practices.

Community members told us they were relieved not to rely on firewood or suffer smoke inhalation. Many described using the time saved for other essential tasks, e.g., farming, attending school, or simply resting. Health workers noted improvements in hygiene, especially among families with children under five.

“It’s the first time we’ve had clean hot water without having to light a fire.” – Woman, Kachero Village

This project builds on earlier phases of collaboration with CANCO and lays the groundwork for continued expansion. We are already exploring new opportunities in the region, with a focus on resilience, gender equity, and climate adaptation.

At Solvatten, we see safe, warm water as essential to dignity, health, and opportunity. With dedicated local partners like CANCO, we’re turning that vision into action.

Big thank you to CANCO for their incredible work on the ground. You can learn more about them here.
