Love letters and Swedish innovation

January 19, 2026

PostNord Sweden has announced the launch of its official 2026 stamp series, Love Letters and Swedish Innovations, a national tribute to ideas and values that have shaped everyday life and strengthened human connection. Among the five selected innovations is Solvatten, a Swedish solar-thermal water treatment solution providing safe, warm water to households in vulnerable communities worldwide.

The stamp series brings together two parallel themes: technological and social innovation, and the enduring power of the love letter as a symbol of empathy, trust, and human bonds across distance. In a time marked by geopolitical tension and increasing polarization, PostNord frames the stamp not only as a carrier of mail, but as a carrier of connection.

The series highlights five landmark contributions that have made everyday life safer, healthier, and more humane: the pacemaker, telecommunications technology, digital music streaming, shared parental leave, and Solvatten’s solar-based water purification. Together, they reflect how Swedish innovation has combined engineering, social reform, and humanitarian purpose to improve lives far beyond national borders.

“We are highlighting the human drive for progress,” said Kristina Olofsdotter, Head of PostNord Stamps, in connection with the launch. “The love letter and the selected innovations both represent ways in which people reach one another — through care, function, and shared responsibility.”

The choice of the love letter as a framing motif is deliberate. In an era defined by speed, digital communication, and strategic rivalry between nations, the handwritten letter becomes a quiet reminder of another foundation of international relations: empathy. A letter travels slowly, deliberately, and across borders. It carries personal meaning rather than power. In this sense, the stamp series does not only celebrate innovation, but also the idea that understanding and compassion remain essential to peace.

For Solvatten, the selection marks a recognition of water, health, and climate solutions as a core part of Sweden’s modern innovation heritage.

“Being included in this series is a great honor,” said David Wadström, Partnerships & Brand Director at Solvatten. “At a time when the world is struggling to find common ground, it is meaningful to see basic human needs — water, health, and care — represented alongside a symbol of love and connection. Innovation is not only about technology. It is about what holds societies together.”

The Love Letters and Swedish Innovations stamp series will be issued in 2026, with more than one million stamps printed for national and international distribution.
