About the project
In 2022, CANCO received its first Solvatten units for distribution to families in Kwale and Taita-Taveta along the southern coast of Kenya. The project primarily targets women working in small-scale fisheries along the coasts.
Through the project, people living in vulnerable communities without access to clean and safe water gain access to all the benefits that using Solvatten provides.
Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO) is a civil society environmental organization working in the public interest. The organization advocates for and contributes to good environmental governance, nature conservation, sustainable use of natural resources, and responsible development.
A large part of the collaboration with CANCO is funded by the Next Energy Foundation; read more here.

Results
The burden of climate change and limited access to safe water in Kenya falls disproportionately on vulnerable rural communities, particularly women, children and the elderly. Through the introduction of the innovative Solvatten Solar Safe Water System in Kwale and Taita Taveta Counties, households have gained improved access to safe drinking water while reducing their dependence on firewood and charcoal. This practical solution contributes to better health outcomes, environmental conservation and greater resilience to climate-related challenges.
