Our Five Themes

Solvatten provides households with access to clean warm water using the power of the sun. It impacts more than just water quality—from health and finances to climate, security, and the ability to manage crises.

Solvatten creates value across different areas that are interconnected and reinforce one another. Explore our themes here.

The Ripple Effect

We develop collaborations built on interpersonal relationships that influence how Solvatten is used and monitored over time, creating even more value—like a ripple effect.

Through education and the users’ own participation, a sense of ownership and self-determination is created, which is vital in all forms of collaboration.

Mutual trust is fundamental to creating a sustainable future for everyone.

Step by Step

Needs Analysis

Projects begin by identifying areas where access to clean water is lacking and families are at risk of waterborne diseases, such as cholera.

Dialogue and Planning

Together with local organizations and stakeholders, activities are developed based on local conditions. All efforts aim to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and improve the water situation.

Education and Engagement

Representatives of the local community, especially women and those managing the household, receive training on how to use Solvatten and how it can contribute to better health, generate improved income, and reduce environmental impact.

We recommend that participants are required to pay a fee or provide a contribution.

Distribution

All Solvatten units are registered in a digital registry. Solvatten is then distributed to households, savings groups, schools, and health clinics where local project leaders have identified the greatest needs.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Usage and impact are monitored over time to ensure everything is functioning and delivering results. This can be done through meetings, home visits, or mobile phone communication.

I de enstaka fall Solvatten inte används förordar vi att organisationen identifierar ett nytt hushåll med ett större behov.

Measuring Household Impact

When a family gains access to Solvatten, both health and quality of life improve. Clean water for drinking and warm water for hygiene, laundry, and cooking reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and create better conditions for a more secure daily life.

At the same time, the need for firewood and charcoal to boil water is reduced. This saves time, reduces household costs, and helps decrease the pressure on both local forests and the climate.

For the family, the impact is about more than just water. It is about a behavioral change that leads to better health, increased security, and more time for work, school, family, and other parts of daily life that would otherwise be neglected.

Selected Projects with Solvatten

Solvatten is used in several types of projects depending on local needs, target groups, and context. Here are some of the areas where the solution is currently used with organizations and partners.

No Smoke Without Fire – a pilot project with the Wildhood Foundation

No Smoke Without Fire – a pilot project with the Wildhood Foundation

Together with the Wildhood Foundation and their local partner Akashinga, park rangers in Mozambique were equipped with Solvatten, which they evaluated during the end of 2025. They saw how Solvatten made a significant difference in the rangers' daily lives in the field; when the sun replaces fire, they avoid dangerous smoke and improve both health and safety.

With the Red Cross in Mozambique

As part of the PREPA project implemented by the Mozambique Red Cross, funded by the Swedish Embassy and supported by the Swedish Red Cross, 216 households were able to receive Solvatten within the framework of their WASH interventions.
Ouirgane, Morocco

When the earthquake struck, electricity was lost, water pipes broke, and all mountain water reservoirs collapsed. Roads were impassable, preventing vehicle access. Solvatten is now being used here, providing protection against diseases and other issues that arise in the aftermath of a natural disaster.
Solvatten x COSME

Solvatten x COSME

Along the coast of southern Kenya, Plan International works to strengthen resilience, biodiversity, and gender equality by using nature-based solutions to support sustainable livelihoods, particularly for women working in environmental conservation. Solvatten has proven effective in reducing firewood consumption, which promotes environmental protection and climate change mitigation efforts. The project has demonstrated strong local engagement and a positive reception of the technology.
Clean Water in Luapula, Zambia

Clean Water in Luapula, Zambia

Through our collaboration with Plan International Zambia (PIZ) and Plan International Canada, nearly 5,000 Solvatten units have been distributed to rural villages in Zambia since 2023. This provides over 25,000 people with a sustainable solution for clean and warm water.
